What to Wear for Family Photos: A Simple Guide

One of the questions I hear most often is “What should we wear?” The good news is it doesn’t have to be stressful. Outfits play a big role in how your photos feel, but it’s less about perfection and more about choosing clothes that help you feel comfortable and confident.

Coordinate Thoughtfully

Some families love the clean look of everyone in white or everyone in black, and that can photograph beautifully when done well. If that’s your style, go for it. But in most cases, I recommend choosing colors that complement each other rather than matching exactly. A mix of neutrals with a few pops of color allows each person’s personality to shine while still feeling cohesive in your photos.

Think About Movement

I love when kids can run, play, and snuggle in their photos. Pick outfits that move easily. Flowing dresses, soft layers, and comfortable fabrics photograph beautifully and allow for natural connection.

Keep the Location in Mind

If we’re shooting in a field, earthy tones always look amazing. If we’re downtown, a bolder palette works well. The setting will naturally influence how your clothing shows up on camera.

Add Texture and Layers

Mixing textures like knits, denim, linen, and lace adds depth and interest to your photos. Layers such as cardigans, scarves, or hats are great options too, especially for kids.

At the end of the day, wear what feels like you. The more comfortable and natural you feel, the more your love and connection will shine in your photos.

Much Love,

Jen
